Fall Camp: Practice at AT&T

San Francisco is Bear Territory

The team practiced at AT&T Park on Tuesday afternoon, holding a 2-hour long session in helmets and shorts.  This gave the players a chance to get acclimated to the field that they will be sharing with the San Francisco Giants this fall.  It was likely their only practice on the Giants’ home field, as they will reportedly practice in Berkeley during the season, while traveling to SF the night before each home game.

Practice mostly consisted of various drills and offense-only/defense-only work, except for a limited 7v7 session at the end.  The offense mainly worked on the outfield grass, while the defense saw most of its time in the infield (including the dirt).  A few highlights:

– Bryan Anger boomed back-to-back 60+ yard punts, to reach McCovey Cove – starting from home plate, it took him 2 consecutive tries to clear the right field wall and into the water.  Later on in kicker-only drills, he consistently kicked 50+ yarders to Giorgio Tavecchio, who displayed good awareness and hands by fielding every punt.

– Maynard and Bridgford both connected several times on long passes to their WRs, including Allen, Jones, Calvin and Edmond.  Anthony Miller, Spencer Hagan and Richard Rodgers also showed nice hands during the 7v7 session.  Also of note, Brendon Bigelow took a few #1 reps during 7v7s.

– Kaelin Clay, Spencer Ladner, Darren Ervin, and Will Kapp were all on the sidelines in red jerseys doing rehab work (as confirmed by Okanes & Gorcey).  Kapp reportedly had a minor ankle sprain, but was back at practice Wednesday.

After practice was over, CSN Bay Area interviewed Coach Tedford, as part of a Chronicle Live video segment:

Practice returned to Berkeley on Wednesday, as the team held a scrimmage at Witter Field.  Rivals’ Cal writer Ryan Gorcey provides a detailed report here:

Fall Camp is now a bit past the halfway point, and will conclude in the middle of next week.  The team will then begin preparing for the season opener, where they will face Fresno State at Candlestick Park.  An official depth chart (2-deep) in all likelihood will not be released until a few days before the FSU game.  So in the meantime, here is Cal Football Blog’s unofficial projection, based on our observations so far:
